Welcome to Terpsichori Greek Dance Circle!
Where it’s about more than just steps…
Did you know that there are over 1,200 traditional Greek dances? And it’s not just about this high number of dances – but the huge variation we can experience in the different regions of Greece. Music and dance are changing from village to village… Fascinating, especially for the size of the country, do you agree?
Due to the folklorisation of Greek dances, most of these hardly get exposure among the wider public though.
People return from holiday thinking that Greek dances are about Syrtaki, Zorba, Chasaposerviko, Zeibekiko and Tsifteteli – dances they see in tavernas, holiday resorts and bars.
And the “lucky” ones who get to see some local dances, often get a distorted or modernized version of the dance in order to impress laic people.
Meanwhile, the REAL dances start to get forgotten…
Terpsichori Greek Dance Circle’s mission is to teach this rich variety of traditional dances to a wider public the authentic way, while having fun at the same time.
Authenticity is our highest value – therefore when you join our dance classes or seminars, you will only see real dances, as they were / are danced in villages.
Our philosophy is that a dance is more than just the steps – it all came alive influenced by the geography, social status, musical instruments, costumes, religion, customs etc. of that specific village!
Why are there many couple dances in the islands?
Why is the right arm underneath our right neighbour’s left arm with the crossed handhold?
Why did the Sarakatsans and Vlachs dance with slow and quiet steps?
Why does music in Rhodes, Kos or Karpathos resemble to Cretan music?
Plenty of questions – and plenty of answers…
During our dance classes, we encourage participants to notice the characteristics of the different dance regions and be able to recognize them when hearing a piece of music.
And with the repetition of dances our aim is to make people remember some important details about the dance (why, where and when it is danced).

What people say about us
When I moved to Brussels from Greece, Erika’s classes quickly became a home away from home for me. I found a lively and multicultural group who seemed to know all about the Greek tradition of philoxenia. I love the inclusive, non-competitive approach to the classes and they have become a key part of my week. When friends ask me what I’m doing on a Sunday afternoon, I tell them I’m going to get my Greek dance fix!
Another Greek dance seminar has come to an end. Most emotional for me for certain reason.
People we are trying to get to know because they have become customary in our eyes. Others we meet for the first time and we hope that this will not be the last. Receive and give evergy to move forward… All this through Greek folk dances and teachers who share their knowledge with passion.
A Greek dance seminar by Terpsichori in Brussels includes all this kind of feelings…
This is probably WHY IT WORKS. 😉
